How to replace a roof tile

Replacing a roofing tile is not an easy job, but someone has got to do it. And for a cost conscious homeowner, this usually means they are going to be one completing the task. The good news is that it is not nearly as difficult as it may seem. In fact, with a little prep work it can be completed within a few hours. Here is how it is possible.

Step 1 – Purchase new roof tile

If a roof tile appears to be broken during a routine inspection, it is important to have it replaced right away. Failing to do this can lead to water damage and other roofing issues. The first step to replacing it is heading down to a local home improvement store and buying a new tile.

In order to guarantee the correct tile is purchased, take the broken tile to the store and show it to an expert. Not only will they be able to find the right material, but can also help secure a colour match, something that can be easy to overlook.

Step 2 – Remove the broken tile

Before a new tile can be installed, the old one must be removed. A lot of people new to roof tiles do not realise they tend to overlap and in order to extract the old piece in its entirety, the tile above it must be lifted up. These can be propped up with anything sturdy and capable of holding the weight of the tile. After that, slide the old one out.

Step 3 – Install the new tile

Essentially, installing the new tile is simply the reverse of removing the old one. Take the new tile and slide it underneath the overlapping one. Be sure the overlapping tile is being propped up to prevent it from coming down on the new piece while it is being installed. Once the new one is in place, return the overlapping tile to its original position.

Step 4 – Check the tile

Once the new tile is in place, it is important to check to see if everything has been installed properly. This means a homeowner will have to examine the roof to see if the new tile or any of the tiles around the new one are loose. A loose tile is a sign that things have not been securely fastened and the process needs to be redone. It’s important to note that a loose tile is just as problematic as a broken one and can cause damage if not fixed.

Step 5 – Visual inspection

Finally, carefully stand up and see how the new tile looks. Everything should appear symmetrical. If there is a tile or tiles sticking out or not lined up properly, something happened during the installation that caused everything to lose its shape.
